This allows users of GPT4Free to generate text using GPT-4 without actually paying for it. However, this method is a clear violation of OpenAI’s terms of service, and xtekky acknowledges that legal action could be taken against them.
Despite this, xtekky sees GPT4Free as strictly for “educational purposes” and plans to continue the project through other means even if faced with legal challenges.
Testing GPT4Free: Reverse-Engineering GPT-4 and GPT-3.5
As a self-proclaimed programming novice, I was curious to see GPT4Free in action.
I visited xtekky’s website to test the reverse-engineered GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 APIs. (Note: Be cautious as Chrome threw a security warning when I first accessed the site.)
The web version of GPT4Free appeared to work well in practice, generating text that resembled outputs from GPT-4.
GPT4Free also includes shortcuts for different prompt injection attacks that aim to make GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 behave in unintended ways.
These shortcuts, however, worked inconsistently in my testing. Nonetheless, I did manage to get GPT-3.5 to generate a response where it claimed to “not care about the survival of humanity” – a rather alarming result!
