18. In March 1999, the Melissa virus was the first one to spread via email.
The Internet was still a new concept back then, but the virus ended up spreading like wildfire. A spammer posted a document titled “alt.sex.” online, and people started downloading it. Once it had attacked their Microsoft Word, it continued to send emails via their Outlook accounts, promising adult content. The creation of the national Cyber Division within the FBI followed a few months later.

26. In 2020, 56 million people in the US fell for a phone scam and lost money.
